Trails in Highlands Ranch

by Jessie on November 3, 2011

For those who enjoy walking, hiking, running or biking in the great outdoors, the Highlands Ranch trail system is a huge benefit.  This extensive trail system goes throughout the Highlands Ranch community and offers trails for people of all skill levels.  Some trails are concrete, some are gravel and some are single track meaning you can always find the perfect trail to fit the activity you plan on doing.

There are around 58 miles of trails in Highland Ranch so it can be hard to get to know where you enjoy you outdoor activity the most.  The first step to figuring this out would be to check out a map of the Highlands Ranch trail system.  To see a map of the Highlands Ranch trails, visit www.highlandsranch.org, click on Parks & Outdoor Space and then Trails.  Here you will find a link to a PDF portraying a map of the Highlands Ranch trail system.  Another helpful idea for attempting to learn the trails is the Healthy Steps Program.  This program sets you up with a map, a pedometer and a log so you can keep track of your healthy lifestyle and get to know the Highlands Ranch trails.  Signing up for this program will also give you access to a list of its other participants whom you can then contact and join as walking, biking, running or hiking partners.

Highlands Ranch trails do have safety rules that apply throughout the trail network.  Highlands Ranch asks that you keep your dogs on leashes when traveling the trails as well as for you to make sure and pick up after your pooch when taking him or her on a nature walk.  Just like when you drive, Highlands Ranch prefers if you walk, bike, run or hike on the right side of the trail and save the left side for passing, which can only be done once you have make your presence apparent to the people or person in front of you.  Bicyclists must yield to pedestrians on the trails.  It is courteous to stay on the trails when you are using them. Wandering off path can cause unwanted erosion and may harm native plants.  Another risk with wandering off the path is getting lost.  To avoid getting lost make sure you have a trail map with you when using the trails system.  If you are using the trail system at night make sure and know your route ahead of time and bring a flashlight and trail map just in case.  No motorized vehicles are allowed on the trails or in any parks or open space in Highlands Ranch.

There are also other trails in and around Highlands Ranch and Douglas County.  The Wildcat Mountain Trail system is supported by Douglas County and was created in 2006.  These trails are located in the Backcountry Wilderness area, 8,200 acres of preserved land near Highlands Ranch.  These trails are a bit more rural and allow horses, but not dogs.  To check out more details about the Wildcat Mountain Trail system, their location and rules, visit www.hrcaonline.org and work your way to the information on trails.
