R.I.P. Rocky Mountain News
Today marks the last day the Denver Rocky Mountain News has been published. The (almost) 150 year old newspaper is closing down. That leaves residents of Denver and Highlands Ranch with only one choice for their newspaper: The Denver Post
I have heard questions like “Did the JOA between the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News kill the RMN?”. I remember back in 2001 when the JOA (Joint Operations Agreement) was established that especially business advertisers feared higher advertising prices. For us as consumers the problem was more how much a subscription would cost and how much prices would go up.
Well, we know one thing and that is prices did for sure not go down. Now that Denver has become a city with only one major newspaper publication, it might be that we will see higher prices for classified ads, normal advertising, and subscriptions.
Anyway – these are bad economic times and my feelings and sympathies go out to the staff of the Rocky Mountain News. They have tried and it just wasn’t supposed to be. Let’s hope they will a) get a good severance package and b) will find a new employer soon. Thank you for all what you have done.
PS: If you want to subscribe to the Denver Post, use this link to save a nice chunk of money on your new newspaper subscription.
