Local Sales Leads for your Business

by AboutHR on May 6, 2010

Localized lead generation is not something really new, but nowadays this type of lead generation is much more important. It does not suffice anymore to just have a sales person walk door to door and make a sales pitch. With smart phones and Internet becoming much larger pieces in our life’s your lead generation for your small business needs to go online, too.

A small business has options to do so, but which one is best. Working on an online strategy requires time and skills for the online world. You can either target to generate local leads through an in-house team/sales representative or other in-house efforts or you can outsource the task completely and only receive the local leads from the company you work with.

The latter is usually the most efficient form to get local online sales leads for your small business. When outsourcing this task you can continue to concentrate on your business and do what you can do best. Here is a check list of items you need to look at when considering hiring a service provider or Internet Consultant to generate targeted leads.

1) Determine how much a targeted lead is worth it for you. You need to come up with a real life money value.
2) Define what makes a lead for you? The default information you would receive is usually a name and a phone number + eventually an email address.
3) Put processes in place to work the leads. If a service provider sends you the leads you need to be able to contact the potential customer right away in most cases. Somebody looking for a new furnace or an AC unit might already work with your competitor.
4) You still need to sell your product and services to the potential customer. A lead provider will not do that for you. If you expect something like this, hire a sales rep. So, you need to be able to convert the efforts into a sale.
5) In most cases you need a website and preferably allow the service provider to upload a so-called landing page. The landing page will be used to generate the leads. The service provider will drive online traffic to that page and the scripts and data collection pieces involved will allow them you catch the proper information needed. Don’t make mistakes – your homepage is not a lead generation page.

Overall once all the contractual details are worked out, the lead process is simple. The service provider will generate the targeted traffic and collect the leads. The leads will then be submitted to you.

Local lead generation in this business model is a performance based business model – meaning you only pay for leads you receive. The entire risk of generating leads is on the side of the service provider.
