It’s official: Our traffic situation is getting worse

The latest INRIX National Traffic Scoreboard shows that the traffic in the Denver Metro Area is getting worse (no surprise here I would say). If you have ever driven in Los Angeles or Chicago, you know how bad traffic can be and that traffic in Denver is by far not the worst. This new traffic survey shows that “we” are on track to make it to the top and join Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, and other ones really quick.

Denver’s traffic is bad. How bad? The Denver traffic congestion is ranked as 15th worst in the entire country.  The information for the scoreboard is gathered from data provided by more than 1.7 million GPS equipped vehicles – effectively providing billions of data points across the United States. Where is traffic actually worse than in Denver? According to INRIX the five most congested traffic areas are Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Washington D.C. and Dallas.

Traffic time in Denver has also worsened dramatically over the past 4 years. The commute in Denver moved from the 30th slowest drive in 2006 to now the 23rd slowest in 2009. Keep in mind that we are talking Metro Areas here and not states. Also, the worst hour of the week to drive in Denver is on Fridays at 5 p.m., which makes it the 28th worst commute in the entire nation.  For us here in Highlands Ranch this is easy to confirm – try to get onto C-470 from I-25 at Park Meadows Mall on a Friday afternoon. Been there, done that and it is not pretty.
