Interview with Chris Condie

Christopher Condie is one of the candidates for the Douglas County School Board in District A. While doing research for my own ballot I ran into Christopher’s website and found it interesting enough to send him a couple of questions. Please find the interview with Christopher Condie below:

1.  What are your plans and goals if elected to join the Douglas County School Board?

I plan to exercise the great trust of the community, if elected, by assuring my votes on the board are based upon a thoughtful analysis of the issues presented to the board.  I take seriously the District tenet that "All means all".  I plan to assure a balance not only between diverse categories of students and educational needs, but also between the School District and the taxpayers.

2.  What exactly triggered the decision to run for a seat on the Douglas County School Board?

Two close friends (and administrators and employees in the District) pursuaded me that my knowledge, experience, and approach to issue resolution would benefit the District.  I viewed their request of me to run as a duty as a member of the community to give back to the District that has given me and my family so much.  I feel strongly that regular, able citizens serve each other where they can and when the opportunity arises.

3.  What would be your "30 Second Elevator Speech" to convince a possible voter to vote for you?

Service on the Douglas County School Board involves many complicated, and sometimes controversial, issues.  A vote for me would be a vote for someone who has experience working effectively and successfully with others on such types of matters.  I promise that I will look at all issues presented to the board in an objective and open-minded manner.  I will do my best to balance the educational needs of the students attending in the District with the trusted stewardship of the taxpayers to assure that the District is fiscally sound and using the resources given it effectively and appropriately.

4.  If you could change something immediately after being elected - what would that be?

I don't have a specific agenda for change that I bring to the position.  Therefore, I would not change anything immediately after being elected.  I think the superintendent, Jim Christensen, is doing a wonderful job leading the District in meeting its remarkable goals.  The District does an exemplary job provided an educational framework for its students that is the envy of the State.  It does so well within the resources entrusted to it.  This is not to suggest that there is nothing requiring improvement within the District.  Improving educational opportunities and approaches for students with special needs, and improving the nutritional value of the meals and snacks available in the schools are just two examples where improvement is possible.  However, the issues that can be improved tend to be nuanced and require the balanced approach upon which my platform is based.  I would look to constantly, and over time, motivate the District to improve where possible but would not look to change anything immediately.

5.  You seem to live in Highlands Ranch.  What do you like best about Highlands Ranch?

Highlands Ranch is a wonderful community for raising families.  It is safe.  It has tremendous schools.  The people are friendly and community oriented.  To borrow from the poet, Robert Frost, when my family was faced with the choice of staying in Salt Lake City and the comfortable familiarity with that "path" or of taking the unknown "path" of moving to Highlands Ranch, our decision to take the path less traveled made all the difference.  Anne, my wife of over 23 years, and I and our four children have loved all Highlands Ranch has offered us.  We have been blessed to live here.

I’d like to thank Christopher Condie for his time to answer my interview questions. All the best for the upcoming election from AboutHighlandsRanch.com. You can visit Christoper Condie's website here.
