Funnel Cloud over Highlands Ranch

Some scary moments today. We were just returning home from a visit to a playground when we noticed a funnel cloud building up over Highlands Ranch. We were driving down Wildcat Reserve Parkway coming from the intersection of Wildcat Reserve and McArthur Ranch. On the left side we saw the funnel cloud slowly climbing down. We lost the view for a minute or so while approaching Mountain Vista Highschool, but going down that hill from the Highschool we had an excellent view at the cloud. It seemed like the cloud was a) coming down a little faster than before and b) was moving towards our direction.

We decided to play it safe and did not stop, but rather made sure we would get away to a safe place. The rain was very heavy and it also looked like hail was in the air. Some people stopped their cars to watch the funnel cloud, while others became a road hazard by not paying attention to the road, but rather watch the cloud while driving and talking on their cell phones at the same time.

We made it home safely, but we endured very heavy rain and hail. The road was covered with water several inches high at times, but our Jeep made it through fine. Here are some pictures about the aftermath of this storm + a link to 9news.com where they report about the funnel cloud as well. The good thing – the cloud never touched ground to become a tornado.
