Ok, we all know that the Christmas retail season starts in late August or early September because that’s when Costco and Sam’s Club and other places start selling the first Christmas items. It’s already standard that as soon as Halloween is gone, Christmas decoration takes over in stores. But is it really necessary for a local radio station here in Denver to start playing Christmas music 24/7 a week before it is even Thanksgiving?!
While driving this morning I was skipping from one radio station to another and of course there it was – Christmas music. This one specific station played one song after another and I remember from the years before they do this the entire Christmas season. But come on, the Turkey has not even hit the plates yet and you start playing Christmas songs? If it is one or two – maybe that is Ok, but constantly?! That is one sure way in my opinion to really cause serious Christmas anxiety among people. Show some respect – play Turkey music until the bird is done, then switch to Christmas music. But I will definitely avoid your station and the advertisers that support you.
Another thing that I thought is out of whack are store hours on Thanksgiving Day. Wasn’t it that mainly supermarkets and Liquor stores were open until early afternoon. Then everyone went home, ate some Turkey, and prepared for Black Friday. Now Black Friday already starts in the late hours of Thursday (Wal-Mart, Toys R us, Macys, Best Buy, Kohl’s, Target), but what I saw the other day really made wanting to boycott that particular store.
Michael’s is open on Thanksgiving Day from 4 PM to 9 PM. REALLY???????
Isn’t that the time when most people have a nice family Turkey Dinner? What is so special about the products at Michael’s that one has to leave the Turkey at the table and goes shopping at Michael’s? And to Michael’s management – all I can say is, you do not show any (!) respect to your employees and I will definitely find other stores where I can buy stuff. Not that I am a big Michael’s shopper, but even the few times per year I went there, that won’t happen again.
Don’t get me wrong – it’s a trend that stores open earlier and earlier to get an advantage compared to their competitors. I get that. I run my own business. I would not want anyone who works for me to be working between 4 and 9 PM on Thanksgiving Day. I honor and value family and that would one of those days where the money is just not worth it. Retail is retail and it comes with some odd hours to work, but really – Thanksgiving Day, 4-9 PM at Michael’s?!
Alright, enough bickering for today. I know that many words have been said about these things even on major news outlets already. Times are a changing. But it is also up to us consumers to make a difference and NOT to jump on something just because. It is easy to stay home and to enjoy time with the family.
