Business Review: Front Range Mechanical

by AboutHR on May 14, 2010

Early this spring I reached out to several local businesses to get an estimate for a new installation for central air conditioning. I gave the first shot to the company who had put in the furnace a year ago (before I bought the house), but for one their prices were outrages and second the sales person just did use the wrong tactic to convince me. It even got a little awkward when I asked for a small change to the quote and to receive it via email. So, I did not want to work with that company. 2 other companies came out, but I just did not get the right feeling. Then a co-worker at my wife’s work place recommended Front Range Mechanical and we called them up.

Steve, the owner, came out and looked at the house and explained everything to my wife. I called him up later that day to ask a few questions. Steve was busy, but promised to call me back that night and he did. He spent about 30-45 minutes with me on the phone and walked me through his estimate, explained the different options and the differences between the different AC units. I did not feel pressured into a deal at any time and comparing this to the other companies, we had a clear winner even though the offer was not the lowest (but also not the highest).

There were a couple of things that made me feel comfortable giving Front Range Mechanical my business. For one, the amount of information they gave us was huge. Steve answered every question even if the answer would have meant less profit for him. Second, we needed an electrical sub panel as the breaker box was full. Another company wanted $1500 for a simple sub panel while Front Range Mechanical said “Let me send out my electrician to look at it in detail. Maybe we do not need one. But in case we do, the cost should be no more than $650.” This sounded fair to me (especially since had looked up parts and considered doing that part myself (+ pulling a permit which would have required me drive down to Castle Rock)). And last but not least the AC unit we bought we fairly priced and came with an extensive warranty.

The following Monday Steve’s crew showed up on time and within a day they had installed the AC unit and the sub panel. The work was done professionally. Once they were done they walked me through everything they did and showed me what to look out for. It was explained how the AC unit would work and when to service it the first time.

Of course now that it was installed the weather has been consistently cold as you probably know. So, I have not been able to test the AC unit under hot weather conditions, but I am fairly confident everything will be just fine.

Disclosure: This is NOT a paid review nor have I received any rebates or discounts on my AC purchase.
