Burglaries in Highlands Ranch
The Douglas County Sheriff has released the following media release about recent burglaries in Highlands Ranch. I guess the bad economy has really hit home now with these kind of things on the rise. The concerning part here is how the suspect approached the houses during the day. So, if you are at home during the days, please keep an eye open for your neighbors that are away at work or other activities.

Douglas County Sheriff Needs Neighbors to Keep Eyes and Ears Open
NARRATIVE: DOUGLAS COUNTY: Four different houses on the west side of Highlands Ranch were burglarized on the same day. Sheriff David A Weaver encourages citizens to keep their eyes and ears open to what is going on in and around their neighborhoods.
On 03/05/09, between the hours of 9:30 am and 5:15 pm, houses on Spring Hill Pl, Westbury Cir, Red Oakes Dr and Dolton Way were all the victims of a burglary. One homeowner came home to find the garage door open, and items missing. Another victim arrived home to find his front door open and the window next to it smashed. The homeowner on Red Oakes Dr had received a message from a neighbor about a person in her backyard. When deputies arrived on scene they saw that the back sliding glass door had been smashed and numerous rooms had been gone through and items taken.
The homeowner on Westbury was home at the time of the incident and heard someone ringing her front door. She was not able to get to the front door, even after the bell kept ringing and then someone started knocking on the door. The next thing she heard was a loud noise like breaking glass coming from the back of her house. When she went to see what had happened, she saw someone standing in her house. She yelled at the suspect, who then turned and ran away.
The descriptions of the suspect were similar in that he was described as a white male, mid to late 40’s, 5’08 – 6’00, 165-180 pounds, medium build, long gray hair in ponytail. A vehicle was seen that was described as a dark blue or black, late model “boxy” SUV similar to a Ford Explorer or Chevy Blazer.
Items taken from the houses range from jewelry and electronics, to cameras and other smaller miscellaneous items. Detectives are also investigating two similar residential burglaries that occurred in February on Sparrow Hawk Dr and Castle Ridge Way, trying to determine any connection to the most recent burglaries.
Patrols have increased in those and other areas and all cases are under investigation.
Sheriff Weaver encourages citizens to get to know their neighbors and if your block does not already have one, start a neighborhood watch program. Except for the house on Westbury, no one was at home during the other incidents. Community programs are a good way for citizens to get to know their neighbors. Once this occurs they may be more likely to keep a watchful eye on your house when you are gone. Sheriff Weaver also reminds citizens that if you see something suspicious such as someone ringing your neighbor’s door several times then trying the door handle, call 9-1-1 right away. If you come home and discover that your house has been burglarized, leave immediately and call 9-1-1 from a safe location.
