AMC Theatre Highlands Ranch Bans Outside Snacks and Food

AMC Theatre chain announced that they are no longer allowing outside food or snacks to be brought into the movie theatres. The theater giant AMC Entertainment Inc. has banned outside food and drinks at all of its 304 theater complexes after testing the idea at several locations. If you want to eat or drink during a movie, you have to buy your snack at the overpriced concession stand. I actually was at the movies last Sunday and bought a medium size Popcorn (no drink – just the popcorn). The price was outrageous in my opinion – $6.50 for a medium sized bag of popcorn.

Now, I can understand that they want to make money and that is their business and that is perfectly fine, but I think “milking” customers this way is greedy and not very customer friendly. I don’t mind buying the popcorn and we actually shared the bag between my wife and my son and myself. But consider a family of 4 or 5 going to the movies and buying drinks and snacks. Depending on the time of the day and what kind of snacks or drinks are purchased, that trip to the movies can easily go into the $120 – $150 range. That is no small chunk of money. In the past it has been a life saver (so to speak) to bring a small snack inside the theatre and just to buy a drink, but now many families probably have to think twice if they go to the movies as often as in the past or if they have to reduce their visits to make up for the extra expenses.

For AMC I would actually ask the company to step up a little bit in this case and to expand the snack menu and to include some more healthy choices. The concentration of unhealthy food in their concessions is a shame. I would also recommend to increase the overall quality of the food and snacks provided so that it might be easier to justify the extra expense.
